According to Nadezhda Kudryasheva, the aim of the Siberian division of the SETAC Russian Language Branch is to involve the Siberian region in the global information space. “Recently, there has been growing concern about the environmental state of our region and the growth of ecological activity of citizens. The Siberian division of the SETAC Russian Language Branch can bring more professionalism to this movement, which is essential for all participants − from citizens’ initiatives to governments and businesses," said the ecologist. Kudryasheva thinks that the ecological state of territories should be evaluated according to modern international criteria, it should be based on both chemical and biological assays, “In such a city as Krasnoyarsk, we can observe a discrepancy between results of chemical and biological assays: When chemical analysis shows the average and even good ecological parameters, biological indicators can show deterioration of the environment. The reasons for this might be the following: Firstly, it is impossible to analyze all chemical contaminants, and secondly, the effect on living organisms, such as plants, animals, humans, is not a simple sum of the effects of chemical pollutants, and hence the prediction of the biological effect of complex chemical mixtures is not possible in most of the cases. In addition, unfortunately, it is very easy to manipulate the results of chemical analysis for showing admissible environmental reporting.”

Note, that at the first telethon in the Year of Ecology in Russia, which took place on 6 December 2016 in the International Information Agency “Russia Today,” the SETAC Russian Language Branch announced a proposal to the legislative and executive bodies of the Russian Federation on the need to modernize the system for assessing the ecological state of the territories. A scientific background for the introduction of the biological methods to environmental practices exists, for example, biophysicists of Krasnoyarsk city actively promote the bioassay and bioindication methods. It is essential that biological methods begin to be used officially by management decision-making bodies.

The youth “wing”; of the Siberian division of the SETAC Russian Language Branch is also represented by graduate student Elizabeth Baygina and student Katherine Kovel.
