Exciting Student Activities Lined Up for SETAC Minneapolis

Whether you’re an undergraduate, graduate student or a professional in a postdoctoral fellowship, be sure to plan to attend the student activities at the SETAC North America 38th Annual Meeting, which will be held from 12–16 November in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These events give students an opportunity to exchange ideas, talk with peers from other research groups, and meet potential mentors for scientific and career advice.

On Monday, there is the annual Student/Mentor Lunch and an open invitation for students to attend the Early Career Social. On Wednesday, Peter Calow from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, will discuss “Advice Versus Advocacy in Using the Science We Do to Inform Public Policy” for the Student Noontime Seminar sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive. Finally, meet your peers at the Lakes and Legends Brewery Co. for the Student Mixer on Wednesday evening. Be sure to plan to stay through the closing ceremony on Thursday for the announcements of student awards.  If you’d like to become involved in student programs, please contact us.

  • Monday, 13 November, 11:15 a.m.–1:00 p.m – Student/Mentor Lunch
  • Wednesday, 15 November, 11:15 a.m.–1:00p.m. – Colgate-Palmolive Student Noontime Seminar (pre-register is required)
  • Wednesday, 15 November, 8:00 p.m.–until – Student Mixer at Lakes and Legends Brewery Company
  • Thursday, 16 November, Closing Ceremony – Awards announced for best student paper and poster awards

Donate Items for the Silent Auction

Please consider contributing items to the Silent Auction, a fundraising event held during the annual meeting that benefits student members and student activities. Past auction items have included handcrafts, artwork, photographs, autographed books, lab supplies and equipment, t-shirts and ball caps, office supplies, gift certificates … you name it. The more unique, the better. Create a challenge with your SETAC interest group to provide the most items for the auction! Bidding on items begins during the Opening Reception on Sunday evening and ends during the poster social at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Come view, bid and buy! You can also volunteer to help us with the auction. Submit your donation online, or bring it to the meeting. Email Sue Beach if you have ideas and suggestions for contributions. 

Did you know that the funds raised help support the Student Training Exchange Opportunity (STEO)? This award is intended to provide student members in North America an opportunity to gain experience from universities (other than the student’s home institution), business and government agencies that will support student advancement and training. Applying for this exchange opportunity can provide up to $1,000 to students who need monetary support. Monies raised from the annual Silent Auction help defray student costs associated with internship travel and lodging, and equipment or supplies needed to complete research objectives. Yearly awards are given and the deadline is in April—use the meeting in Minneapolis to line up your training opportunity!
