SETAC Europe 25th Annual Meeting: Environmental Protection in a Multi-Stressed World―Challenges for Science, Industry and Regulators

Carlos Barata, Co-chair of the Program Committee

It is a great pleasure to invite you to the SETAC Europe 25th Annual Meeting, which will be held from 3-7 May 2015 in in Barcelona, Spain. At this meeting, SETAC Europe will celebrate its 25th anniversary with several events during the opening ceremony and throughout the week. The session proposal submission deadline for the meeting has passed and on behalf of the organizers, we are pleased to say we have received 110 session proposals (99 for parallel sessions, 11 for special sessions). This is a high number of session proposals showing the active participation of SETAC members in their annual meeting. We thank all the session chair and co-chairs. Without their help SETAC annual meetings would not be feasible.

Session proposals were of great quality and interest, including common subjects of past SETAC annual meetings on aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicology, ecosystem responses, system biology and ecotoxicogenomics, adverse output paths, endocrine disruption, metal toxicity, fate and behavior of contaminants, emerging contaminants, nanoparticles, long-term effects of pollution, wildlife ecotoxicology, life cycle assessment, risk assessment, exposure and effect modeling and predictive toxicology. There were also proposals for  new sessions on pollution prevention and remediation, and new environmental challenges such as the assessment of the impact of plastics in aquatic ecosystems, antimicrobial resistance in the environment, the use of behavioral responses to endocrine disrupters, the study of the human exposome, the assessment of multiple stressors at the regional scale, consideration of ecological compensation on pesticide regulation and how to consider weak toxicological signals in environmental risk assessment.

At this stage, the SETAC scientific committee members, with the aid of session chairs, will review and refine the proposed sessions, creating an exceptional program and a high-quality meeting in Barcelona. In October, the final session proposals will be launched online, and the call for abstracts will be open. Check barcelona.setac.org for continuous updates, and mark 26 November on your calendar as abstract submission deadline!
