SETAC's long-awaited World Congress is now upon us. Preparations for the meeting have been intense and the Berlin organizers, led by Henner Hollert and Norbert Scholz, along with SETAC Europe Executive Director Dave Arnold and his great team, have put together an outstanding program. More than 2,500 participants will gather in Berlin to celebrate the Society's successes and scientific contributions since the last Congress in Sydney in 2008. There is definitely much to celebrate.

Global Ecorisk Management from Asian Viewpoints

A comprehensive education and research program was conducted at Yokohama National University of Japan in collaboration with the National Institute for Environmental Studies over the last 5 years. The goal of this program was to present a vision and procedure for risk management through investigations regarding ecosystem functions and effects, while emphasizing Asian viewpoints.

The world of toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic modelers has been busy indeed! The recently published General Unified Threshold Model of Survival (GUTS) has a new, more robust version available and it is ready to explore. A thought-provoking new e-book "Making sense of chemical stress", is now available to captivate all those interested in the science of ecotoxicology. Exciting developments are bringing TKTD modelling closer and closer to applications in regulatory environmental decision-making, particularly with respect to pesticide fate models.  Special Symposium on Ecological Modelling in Support of Terrestrial Risk Assessments

Risks to terrestrial species with very different ecologies, life histories, home ranges, diets and exposure pathways and concentrations makes assessment difficult. The SETAC Europe Advisory group MeMoRisk is organising a special symposium on ecological modelling in support of terrestrial risk assessments at SETAC Berlin, followed by a panel discussion of the improved understanding of risk through use models at the cost of complexity.

Upcoming SETAC Europe Technical Workshop MODELINK: How to Use Ecological Effect Models to Link Ecotoxicological Tests to Protection Goals

Protection goals based on ecosystem services are entering European Union guidance for ecological risk assessments of plant protection products. The need for approaches that link standard ecotoxicological data to protection goals is critical. Ecological modelling is a promising tool that allows extrapolation from laboratory conditions and test species to population-level or community-level responses under field conditions, thus providing better risk assessments. Two upcoming workshops will focus on guidance for when and how to apply ecological models to regulatory risk assessments.

SETAC on Earth Day 2012

This year's Earth Day celebration, 22 April 2012, along with World Environment Day on 5 June, serve to increase awareness of important environmental quality issues including sustainable development, water resources, energy, recycling and waste reduction, green economy, conservation and biodiversity and environmental education. Several SETAC members participated in Earth Day events this year and a few shared their stories with us.
